TERM 2 HOME LEARNING

Home learning is really important as it will support your child's learning in school. We would especially like your help in practising reading, spelling and number bonds at home.

  • Reading - We will send home 2 or 3 reading books each week with your child at an appropriate level. Please read each book twice with your child. It is important to ask questions about the text as well as helping them to decode the words. The KS1 Reading Leaflet below will give you some ideas.
  • Spelling - Your child will have 5 words to learn each week based on the Year 1 'exception' words. Please make sure their spelling books are in school on Mondays when they are checked. All of the spelling 'lists' can be found attached below.
  • Number Bonds - Please keep practising number bonds to 10 (and then 20).

We have sent out and attached below a Home Learning Grid for our Term 2 topic of explorers. This is not compulsory - please do as many or as few as you would like! We would love to see and display some of the children's work in school.

Volunteers

We always love to have volunteers in class, particularly for reading. If you have any spare time to help out in class, your support would be really valuable. Please let us know if you are able to come in and help.

Meet the Teachers Session

It was great to see so many of you at our Meet the Teachers information session. The slides we used are attached below for information. If you couldn’t make this date and would like to have a chat, please do pop in at the end of the day or phone the school office to organise an appointment.

PE

We have PE on Tuesday afternoons with our FutureStars coach, Harley. The focus is on Dance in Term 2.

We will also have a second PE session in the week so please can you make sure that children have a labelled PE kit in school at all times.

Snacks and Water

Fruit snacks are provided for Year 1 during morning breaktime. You may wish to send in an additional healthy snack for your child which they will eat during breaktime.

We encourage children to bring in a water bottle to drink during the day. Please label with their name to avoid confusion with other bottles.

Outside Area

We are very excited about our new designated outside space outside Year 1!

This will allow tasks to be set up in a safe space and will protect our resources. Please keep your eye out for our wishlist of second hand items we need as we develop the space !

Current wishlist:

Learning Map 2019 - 2020

Take a look at the document below to see what we will be getting up to across the year!

Author of the Year

Each week, one child will go home with our Biscuit Bear Story Sack.

Biscuit Bear is written and illustrated by our author of the year, Mini Grey. The children will be reading a variety of her books over the course of the year. Please read the book with your child and have fun with some of the activities suggested!

Mini Grey was given her name after being born in a mini in a car park in South Wales! She often narrates from an unusual point of view, such as that of the pea in The Pea and the Princess (2003) (shortlisted for the Kate Greenaway illustration award); the biscuit in Biscuit Bear (2004) - winner of the Nestlé Smarties Gold Prize (under 5s category) - and the spoon in The Adventures of the Dish and the Spoon (2006).
