Class 1

Welcome to Year One!

The children in Year 1 have made a great start to the new year!

We hope this page should provide useful information. Please let us know if there is anything you would like us to put on!

The Team

This year’s Year 1 team are:

  • Mrs Smith (Teacher – Mon and Tues)
  • Miss Morgan (Teacher – Weds mornings, all day Thurs and Fri)
  • Mrs Bullock (PPA Teacher – Weds afternoons)
  • Miss Baker (Teaching assistant – Mon, Weds, Thurs and Fri)
  • Mrs Evans (One-to-one Teaching assistant – Mon, Tues & Weds)
  • Ms Young (One-to-one Teaching assistant – Thurs & Fri)

There will also be two volunteers working with your children at points during the week. They will hear readers and help small groups of children to consolidate their learning.

We always love to have volunteers in class, particularly for reading. If you have any spare time to help out in class, your support would be really valuable. Please let us know if you are able to come in and help.

Meet the Teachers Session

It was great to see so many of you at our Meet the Teachers information session. The slides we used are attached below for information. If you couldn’t make this date and would like to have a chat, please do pop in at the end of the day or phone the school office to organise an appointment.

Term 1 topic

Our topic in Term 1 is ‘Toy Story’ in which we will explore and describe the toys that the children enjoy playing with and compare these toys with toys from the past.

We have looked at what children like playing with now. Children were asked to bring in a favourite toy that they talked about in front of the class, describing what it was made of and why it was important to them.

On Monday 23rd September, we would love to welcome parents and grandparents into class from 2.30pm to share their old toys with the class. The children love seeing and hearing about real experiences and it helps them to understand how things change through history. Let us know if you are able to make it!

A letter has gone out regarding the educational trip to Blaise Castle museum on 26th September where children will have the opportunity to learn about and explore historical toys, particularly from the Victorian era.

All children should now have reading books and new reading records.

Going forward in Term 1, we will change reading books on a weekly basis. Your child will have a set day on which their reading books are changed and we will give your child 2 or 3 reading books to read over the week.

We encourage children to read at least 5 times a week at home. This could be school or home reading books.

We have PE on Tuesday afternoons with our FutureStars coach, Harley. The focus is on ‘invasion games’ in Term 1 and we hope to get outside for PE as much as possible.

We will also have a second PE session in the week so please can you make sure that children have a labelled PE kit in school at all times.

Snacks and Water

Fruit snacks are provided for Year 1 during morning breaktime. You may wish to send in an additional healthy snack for your child which they will eat during breaktime.

We encourage children to bring in a water bottle to drink during the day. Please label with their name to avoid confusion with other bottles.

Outside Area

We are very excited about our new designated outside space outside Year 1!

This will allow tasks to be set up in a safe space and will protect our resources. Please keep your eye out for our wishlist of second hand items we need as we develop the space over Term 1!

The first item we need is children’s coat hangers – if you have a couple going spare, they would be much appreciated!
