Ramadan 12.4.21 - 12.5.21
Ramadan 12th April to 12th May 2021
This is when Muslims observe the month of Ramadan, to mark a time when Allah, or God, gave the first chapters of the Quran to the Prophet Muhammad in 610.
During Ramadan, Muslims fast, abstain from pleasures and pray to become closer to God.
It is also a time for families to gather and celebrate. Ramadan is the ninth month of the Islamic calendar, observed by Muslims worldwide as a month of fasting, prayer, reflection and community.
Fasting is important during Ramadan as it allows Muslims to devote themselves to their faith and come closer to Allah, or God. Fasting is one of the Five Pillars of Islam, which form the basis of how Muslims live their lives.
Muslims believe that Ramadan teaches them to practice self-discipline, self-control, sacrifice, and empathy for those who are less fortunate, thus encouraging actions of generosity and compulsory charity (zakat).
You can exchange Ramadan greetings by saying “Ramadan Kareem,” which translates into “Have a generous Ramadan,” or “Ramadan Mubarak,” which roughly translates into “Happy Ramadan.” On the last day of Ramadan, which is Eid-al-fitr, the greeting changes to “Eid Mubarak’’.
