Running mums from Thornbury set to cover 1,000km in June for charity
A WOMEN’S running group in Thornbury is encouraging people in the town to join them in completing a total of 1,000km for charity this month.
The St Mary’s School Gates running group, which was formed by mums of pupils at St Mary’s Primary School, has set the mammoth task to try to get residents to put their best foot forward to cover the distance from Thornbury to John O’Groats in Scotland.
Organisers have suggested runners keep track of their mileage through the month and try to aim for a 10p donation per kilometre, with all money raised being divided between Thornbury-based children’s charity Jigsaw, and the Ezzy’s Wish to Walk campaign.
Donations can be made to members of the group, who meet every Friday morning outside the school gates at St Mary’s, or in a donations pot in the school. Locations for other pots are yet to be announced.
Kate Maskell, who founded the club with fellow school mum Angela Ashton, said: “This is the first big community fundraiser event we have organised that is open to anyone – which is a major part of why the group was formed.
“It also gives us a chance to engage with the bigger Thornbury picture and let people know we are here and that we are more than ready to welcome any new members.
“Whether you are a first time runner, or complete marathons with ease, anyone is welcome to join in.
“Keep running and make yourself a challenge in June to raise money for two fantastic good causes.”
